Anonymous, c. 1450. This song was popular in the Aragonese court of Naples around 1450. The original is preserved in Ferdinand's library, the remains of which are now stored in the Seville Cathedral.
The 15th century saw the birth of the Reaissance. It was a time of exploration, learning and discovery, the time of Columbus and Marco Polo. Maps of the known world circulated through the courts of Europe, firing the imagination of the average man. The song 'Ayo visto lo mappamundi' emerged from this romantic time of voyage and discovery.
lyrics
I have seen the world map and the navigational charts,
but Sicily/Cecilia is to me the most beautiful in all this world
There are three Sicily's/Cecilia's, no more: all three bear the crown
King Alphonse has two of them: Citrafaro and Ultrafaro
The third is found on the calendar [St. Ceclia's day]
Do not speak of the fourth, for she is found on no map
She comes from the other world
I've seen Corsica and Sardinia, and Medea's island
There's nothing you can show me—Cyprus, Candia, nor Morea
I've searched out with my galleon the new island of Castille
But Cecilia is so beautiful that thoughts of her derange me
